Keynote Speaker Dr. Carole Greenes

Carole Greenes is director of the Practice Research and Innovation in Mathematics Education (PRIME) Center, and professor of mathematics education in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University. She came to ASU in 2007 from Boston University. At ASU, she has served as dean of the School of Educational Innovation and Teacher Preparation at the Polytechnic campus, and associate vice provost for STEM education, before devoting full time to the PRIME Center.

Professor Greenes has authored 310 books and programs for students and teachers, Pre- Kindergarten through college, 75 articles, five mathematical musicals, and two histories of mathematics in story and song. Currently she co-authors/directs with Mary Cavanagh, development of the 8-Volume "MATHadazzle Puzzle Books" series, with problems contributed by middle school teachers in the Phoenix metropolitan area (Volumes 1-3), middle school students (Volumes 4 and 5), and high school students (Volumes 6-8). Professor Greenes is editor of the Arizona Association of Teachers of Mathematics semi-annual journal, OnCore, and author of the on-line monthly MATHgazine Senior (grades 8-12) and MATHgazine Junior (grades 4-8), both of which are made available to Arizona students, teachers, and families at no cost.

Currently, Professor Greenes is principal investigator for the National Science Foundation-funded project App Maker Pro (2015-2018) for high school students and teachers, and the Georgia Tech/Helmsley Charitable Trust-funded, Vertically Integrated Project (VIP) program at ASU for undergraduate and graduate students. The latter is a consortium of 20 colleges/universities that are dedicated to using the vehicle of real world research lab experience for undergraduate students as a way to increase interest in and success with the study of STEM content and preparation for the workforce.

Professor Greenes is a member of the Arizona Association of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (and former president), the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the International Society for Technology in Education, and the American Educational Research Association. She is a member on the boards of the Advisory Council STEM AZ, the Museum of Mathematics in New York City, Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle School (MOEMS) headquartered in New York, and the ASU Preparatory Academies. In 2016, she received the Copper Apple Award for Leadership in Mathematics in Arizona. In 2018, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

The P3 Approach of Project, Product and Performance will  be illustrated with projects, types of products, and the nature of student performances used with students, PreK-Grade 12. All projects are based on studies of the problem contexts that students ”like best.”
